CRAU: Varian, Vyng, Will Byers, Keith
• Summary of CRAU Impact: After awkwardly reuniting in Deerington, Adam and Takashi had an uneasy truce in regards to their previous relationship. Neither had quite gotten over each other, but they also hadn't quite gotten over the way their relationship ended. Months later the two finally admitted their lingering feelings for each other and promised to work on their halves to try and reestablish their relationship.
They went slow. It took time and ultimately an intervention by the ghosts of Deerington for Adam to even admit to Takashi that he died before arriving in Deerington. But they kept their promises, worked through what damaged them before and proved to each other that they weren't going anywhere. They were in it for the long haul. They got engaged, and over a year later were married as the world ended.
His bond with Takashi also encouraged him to reach out to others more often. Traditionally Adam is content to live a quiet life. Go to work, interact with those close to him, go home. He doesn't see much use in making new friends. Which isn't to say he won't help someone in need or fight to protect to someone he doesn't know well, just that he doesn't see the need to make friends with them after.
Takashi, suffice it to say, is the polar opposite. The man has almost never met a stranger. He's not only friends with everyone he's ever met, he feels a personal responsibility for them. While Adam isn't quite that dramatic about it, the proximity of someone so determined to sacrifice himself for every stranger has reluctantly dragged Adam into a space where he is making alternative connections.
But Takashi wasn't the only person who changed Adam during the events of Deerington.
Will Byers has inspired a nearly paternal nature in him since the two first met. Admittedly the boy's seemingly frail nature inspired it at first. He seemed to need protecting, and Adam was in a position to do it when the two began interacting. Suffice it to say Adam soon learned that not only was Will far braver than he'd first imagined, he was hardly short on protectors. Will softens him.
Adam has no problem admitting he has a not insubstantial crush on his half-elf friend, Vyng. He's admitted as much to him (and his partner) and it's mostly considered a point of amusement among all who are aware of it. Beyond that, Adam considers Vyng a good friend. He's proven himself willing to help him more than once, whether it's exploring mysterious mountains or comforting him after his own death. He trusts him absolutely. He just wishes Vyng wouldn't insult his skills as a student. In Adam's experience he's much better than he gives himself credit for.
If someone created a younger version of Adam and made him significantly more chaotic, that person would be Varian. He connects with the boy on multiple levels, from his love of science and exploration to his strong desire to do whatever it takes to protect the people he cares about. They're both stubborn and immovable once they've set their mind to something, and as such Adam has had to reconsider the ways in which he cares about people. When Varian lost his leg Adam's first instinct was to go to his house and crankily fuss over him. Not only would that not have been helpful, he already had people doing that. So he did his best to distract him, help him move forward. The two of them crafted a mechanical leg for him to use in its place, a process that became a bit of a bonding project for the two of them. If pressed Adam would say Varian feels like a younger brother he cares very much about. But thankfully no one presses because honestly neither Varian or Adam could stand so much emotional honesty between the two of them without making it awkward.
In canon there is no information as to what extent Adam and Keith are aware of each other, just that Keith knows who Adam is. Keith knew that Adam was Takashi's partner and at least respected him, but that was all we were given. That changed in Deerington. The two formed a trusted bond over the course of the game, leading to Keith to trust Adam with information about his romantic troubles (much to Adam's exhaustion) and emotional issues he was uncomfortable bringing to Takashi. They even managed to joke together, Adam teasing/chiding Keith about not eating anything of nutritional value and Keith countering with a bewildered description of ceviche as "bait with lemon." Separate of the man who connected them, they became friends. His departure was crushing and is something Adam still mourns.
Character Personality Through Key Moments
* Per
this note from the mods, I will be using CRAU information here.
(2+) Positive Experiences:Adam is
thoughtful. His circle is small, but he goes out of his way to be proactive in caring for its members. When he first arrives in Deerington he keeps coffee in stock at his apartment for Takashi even though the two aren't dating. He checks in on his friends when things go awry and he knows they aren't likely to reach out on their own. He
encourages their love lives and positive pursuits, wanting them to have the best lives they're able to find here. He also
offers advice to people he knows are dealing with situations he's been through himself, hoping to make their treks less chaotic than his own.
Adam is
intelligent. He genuinely loves learning more about the world around him, as he did on his
mountain expedition in Deerington. Noting new phenomenon, discovering how new worlds work and finding the order in chaos is what drives him. He's also an experienced teacher. His intelligence translates into a very specific ability to share what he knows with others, which is what led him to teach in the community college in Deerington. He loves watching people
absorb new concepts and grasp them. This is why he gravitated towards people like Varian, because he could talk to them in this way. It helped make friends when he was otherwise introverted.
(2+) Negative Experiences:Adam is
judgmental. He's quick to make snap decisions about people and these are difficult for him to dislodge later. An iteration of this comes from his interactions with
Link, where he is dismissive of Link's choice to live in the wild and bathe in rivers as nonsensical. Throughout their interactions in game this opinion does not change and he regularly thinks of him as someone who makes his life difficult for himself for no apparent reason. As was the case here, this snap to judgment repeatedly closes Adam off from friendships and potential sources of survival later on down the line.
Adam is
overprotective. Not in a cute "I will do anything for my friends" kind of way, but in an unhealthy way that leads him to decide any threat deserves one in turn. This leads him to make dangerous, nearly blind decisions like
threatening Jon simply for being someone that Takashi gets hurt around. The first time he sees a Galra in Deerington his impulsive overprotectiveness puts him on the
offensive, willing to attack the then-stranger on sight. He's a man who prides himself for being scientifically objective yet fails to see the hypocrisy his overprotectiveness taints his life with.
